The authors consider an evolutionary model for the solidification of a material moving with constant velocity with respect to a fixed system of coordinates and occupying a rectangular domain. It is shown that for the continuous casting problem without internal heating the mushy region disappears in finite time. The main result of this paper is to prove the Lipschitz regularity in space and the Hölder regularity in time of the free boundary of the problem. Also, the stability of the interface is analyzed and, under additional monotonicity assumptions, the authors prove the Lipschitz continuity in space-time of the free boundary. Finally, the convergence towards the steady-state problem as \(t\to\infty\) is considered, as well as the case of an infinite strip.
