The paper has 3 parts. Part 1 deals with nonisotropic Sobolev spaces on stratified nilpotent Lie groups (Poincaré inequalities, Hörmander vector fields). As a main tool the author studies in part 2 approximations of Sobolev functions by polynomials (related to left-invariant vector fields). The third part contains extension theorems on anisotropic Sobolev spaces on stratified groups related to \((\varepsilon, \delta)\)-domains.
