Let \(H_ n\) be the class of all real polynomials of degree \(n\) bounded by 1 on the interval \(-1\leq x\leq 1\). It is a well-known result of S. N. Bernstein that the supremum norm of \((1-x^ 2)^{1/2} p_ n'(x)\) on \([-1,1]\) of arbitrary \(p_ n\in H_ n\) is maximum if \(p_ n\) is the Chebyshev polynomial \(T_ n\) of degree \(n\). The main result of this paper is that the \(L^ 2\)-norm of \((1-x^ 2)^{1/2} p_ n'(x)\) on \([- 1,1]\) for arbitrary \(p_ n\in H_ n\) is also maximum if \(p_ n=T_ n\). It is also shown that \[ \int_{-1}^ 1 (p_ n^{\prime\prime}(x))^ 2 (1-x^ 2)^{-1/2} dx \leq\int_{-1}^ 1 (T_ n^{\prime\prime}(x))^ 2 (1-x^ 2)^{-1/2} dx. \]
