The authors extend results of \textit{S. Kwapień} and \textit{A. Pełczyński} [Stud. Math. 34, 43--68 (1970; Zbl 0189.43505)] to the class of symmetric sequence spaces. The main tool used by the authors is the theory of \((E,F)\)-multipliers which extends the approach from [\textit{G. Bennett}, Duke Math. J. 44, 603--639 (1977; Zbl 0389.47015)].
