Let S denote a regular semigroup, E its set of idempotents and Con S (Eq E) the lattice of congruences of S (equivalences of E). Let \(\rho\in Con S\) and let tr \(\rho\) \(=\rho \cap (E\times E)\). The author proves that the map \(\rho\to tr \rho\) defines a complete lattice homomorphism from Con S to Eq E by using two constructions based on sandwich sets. This answers an open question of F. Pastijn and M. Petrich who proved this result for the special cases where S is locally inverse or group bound or orthodox.
