The geometric setting of the paper under review is as follows: \(X\) is an oriented \(n\)-dimensional manifold (the parameter space) and \(Y\) is a fibre bundle over \(X\) which standard fibre a \(k\)-dimensional manifold (the range of the fields over \(X\)). This is enough to build the multiphase space \(Z\) over \(Y\) which possesses a canonical \(n\)-form \(\Theta\). Accordingly, the pair (\(Z, {\text d} {\Theta}\)) is called a multisymplectic manifold. If \(Z\) is equiped with a (left) action of the Lie group \(G\) which leaves the multisymplectic structure \({\text{rd}} \Theta \) invariant then one can define a momentum mapping \(J: Z\to {\mathfrak g}^*\otimes \Lambda^{n-1}Z\), where \({\mathfrak g}^*\) is the dual space of the Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) of \(G\). A more concrete realization of the above construction can be easily obtained by considering the (\(n + k\))-symplectic geometry on the vertically adapted frame bundle \(L_VY\). The components of the momentum mapping which arise in this situation can be identified with the conserved quantities in the respective field theory. This possibility is illustrated by the field angular momentum, affine and reparametrization symmetries in mechanics. The paper ends with some remarks concerning the role of the reduction theory in the above context.
