The paper deals with stress behaviour in an anisotropic externally pressurized hollow cylinder for both radially and circumferentially orthotropic materials. In the former case, the maximum hoop stress occurs on the inner boundary but the stress concentration factor is infinite. In the latter case, the maximum hoop stress occurs at the outer boundary for sufficiently thick tubes. The analogous problem for an internally pressurized tube shows that a limiting process yields stresses in an anisotropic infinite medium containing a pressurized cavity. In a circular anisotropic disk rotating at a constant angular velocity about its centre, the stress at the centre is infinite for the radially orthotropic material, and the maximum hoop stress is not at the centre in the case of circumferential orthotropy. The stress behaviour described for the plane equilibrium problems occurs also in the corresponding three-dimensional problem for radially symmetric deformation of an anisotropic sphere.
