    Let \(R\) be a principal ideal domain (PID). A \(cR_2\)-module \({\mathbf F}=(F,F_0,F_1)\) consists of a free module \(F\) and pure submodules \(F_0\), \(F_1\) such that \(F_0\cap F_1=0\) and \(mF\subseteq F_0\oplus F_1\) for some \(0\neq m\in R\). The rank of \({\mathbf F}\) is that of \(F\). The main result (Theorem 1.4) asserts that any \(cR_2\)-module \({\mathbf F}=(F,F_0,F_1)\) over a PID \(R\) is a direct sum of \(cR_2\)-modules of rank at most 2. Moreover, the indecomposable \(cR_2\)-modules \(\mathbf F\) are of the form \((0,0,0)\), \((R,0,0)\), \((R,R,0)\), \((R,0,R)\) and \(F=Re\oplus Rf\oplus R{e+rf\over s}\) for some \(r,s\in R\) with \((r,s)=1\), where \(s\) is a non-unit of \(R\), \(F_0=Re\), \(F_1=Rf\).
