Let \(\mathfrak g\) be a classical semisimple Lie algebra and let \(V_{\lambda}\) be the finite dimensional irreducible representation of \(\mathfrak g\) corresponding to a dominant weight \(\lambda\). A basis of \(V_{\lambda}\) is called monomial if each of its elements is the result of applying to a fixed highest weight vector a monomial in the elements of the Chevalley basis in the opposite Borel subalgebra. In the paper under review the authors give a procedure for constructing a monomial basis for \(V_{\lambda}\) and more generally monomial bases for the \(\mathbb Z\)-forms of its Demazure submodules. The construction provides a different approach to and a new proof of the main theorem of standard monomial theory for classical groups as in [\textit{V. Lakshmibai} and \textit{C. S. Seshadri}, J. Algebra 100, 462-557 (1986; Zbl 0618.14026)]. A construction of monomial bases for Demazure modules in the more general symmetrizable Kac-Moody setup is given in [\textit{V. Lakshmibai}, CMS Conference Proc. 16, 199-216 (1994; Zbl 0845.17016) and Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 56, Part 2, 149-168 (1994; Zbl 0848.17020)]. The approach there uses deep results of Kashiwara on global crystal bases. The proofs of the paper under review are elementary and combinatorial. They are based on relatively simple facts about Demazure modules, root operators, the Bruhat order on the Weyl group and the Tableau character formula which is a consequence of [\textit{P. Littelmann}, Adv. Math. 124, 312-331 (1996; Zbl 0892.17009)] and the Demazure character formula.
