The authors develop an abstract approach to weak convergence of spectral shift functions \(\xi(\cdot, H_{j}, H_{0,j})\) associated with pairs of selfadjoint operators \( (H_{j}, H_{0,j})\) in Hilbert spaces \(\mathcal{H}_{j}\) to the spectral shift function \(\xi(\cdot, H, H_{0})\) associated to a pair of selfadjoint operators \( (H, H_{0})\) in the limiting Hilbert space \(\mathcal{H}\) as \(j \rightarrow \infty\). One assumes that \(H_{0,j}\) converges in the resolvent sense to \(H_{0}\) and that the perturbations \(V_{j} = H_{j}-H_{0,j}\) and \(V=H-H_{0}\) can be factorized \(V_{j} = V_{1,j}^{\ast} V_{2,j}\), \(V = V_{1}^{\ast} V_{2}\). Sufficient conditions on \(V_{1,j}, V_{2,j}, V_{1}\) and \(V_{2}\) are given in order that \(\xi(\cdot, H_{j}, H_{0,j})\) converges weakly to \(\xi(\cdot, H, H_{0})\). The approach mimicks the infinite volume limit for multidimensional Schrödinger operators and the used techniques rely on the study of Fredholm determinants and certain measure theoretic facts. The main abstract theorems proved are used to extend vague convergence results for spectral shift functions to weak convergence results. As an application, the authors consider the Schrödinger operators on domains \(\Omega_{j}\) exhausting \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\), \(n = 1,2,3\), as \(j\rightarrow \infty\), with Dirichlet boundary conditions or more general selfadjoint boundary conditions.
