The authors present a variational analysis of the singular plus quadratic potential. The analysis of the radially nodeless states for successive values of the orbital angular momentum is carried out using the product of a power of the radial coordinate and a Gaussian function as trial function. Next, the general solution is formulated in matrix form. Finally, possible ways of extending the present method to other systems are discussed. Numerical computations with different values of the parameters are given in form of tables. Reviewer's remark: Equations (5) and (6) give only extrema of energy, equation (4) not necessarily the minimum.
