Let \(\mathbb F\) denote one of the three fields \(\mathbb R\), \(\mathbb C\), \(\mathbb H\). The author determines the equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of the group \(\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb F)\) of invertible \(n\times n\) matrices with entries in \(\mathbb F\). Using lowest \(K\)-types, unitary induction and cohomological induction he reduces the problem to the spherical case. To handle that he uses a detailed analysis of intertwining operators, signatures and for complex groups even makes use of primitive ideals.
