The author generalizes, for kernel operators in Banach function spaces, a theorem of \textit{S. H. Chang} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 22, 185-189 (1947; Zbl 0029.36501)], which states that a bounded operator on \(L_ 2\) is nuclear iff it is the composition of two Hilbert-Schmidt operators. The results are expressed in a suite of theorems and used to derive optimal eigenvalue estimates for nuclear operators on Banach lattices. In this way the author connects the results of \textit{G. Pisier} [J. Anal. Math. 35, 264-281 (1979; Zbl 0427.46048)] with those of \textit{H. König} and \textit{L. Weis} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 6, 706-729 (1983; Zbl 0516.47003)].
