A finitely generated lattice K is a homomorphic image of a (0,1)-rigid lattice if and only if K has no prime ideals. This equivalence remains valid also for any (0,1)-lattice K generating a proper lattice variety. For either class of lattices, the absence of prime ideals of K is also equivalent to the universality of the category Q(K) of all (0,1)- homomorphisms between lattices whose homomorphic images include K.
