Using tensor notation, the authors give two proofs of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. For a \(3\times 3\) matrix A (of interest in continuum mechanics) they give specific expressions for the coefficients when \(A^ n\) and F(A), respectively, are expressed as quadratic polynomials in A, where F(z) is an analytic function.
