Let R be an analytic \({\mathbb{C}}\)-algebra, Aut R its group of automorphisms. If R has Krull dimension \(\dim R=0\) then \(Aut R\) is a complex Lie group. But if \(\dim R\geq 1\) then it does not seem to be possible to equip \(Aut R\) with the structure of a (non-discrete, finite dimensional) Lie group nor with the structure of a Banach or Fréchet Lie group. Nevertheless the Lie algebra D(R) of those derivations of R which map its maximal ideal into itself might be called ``the'' Lie algebra of Aut R. In fact, it is shown that there is a one to one correspondence between connected complex Lie subgroups of Aut R and finite dimensional subalgebras of D(R). This is used to decide whether there is a bound B(R) on the dimensions of complex Lie subgroups of Aut R. If R is a reduced curve this holds true with B(R) equal to twice the number of associated primes of R. On the other hand, if R is not necessarily reduced but \(\dim R\geq 2\) then \(Aut R\) has complex Lie subgroups of arbitrarily high dimension. Which case occurs for a non-reduced curve depends on a certain property of its primary decomposition.
