Let \(A={\mathbb F}_q[T]\) and let \(L\) be a field that is a finite extension of \({\mathbb F}_q(T)\). A Drinfeld module \(\phi\) of rank \(1\) is an \(A\)-module structure on the additive group of the algebraic closure \(\overline{L}\) such that \(T\) acts like a polynomial \(aX^q+TX\) with \(a\in L^*\). From the class field theoretic point of view these modules have the same importance as the \({\mathbb Z}\)-module \(\overline{{\mathbb Q}}^*\) has for number fields. For a finitely generated submodule \(\Gamma\) of rank \(r\) and for \(M\in A\) let \((1/M)\Gamma\) be the \(M\)-division module of \(\Gamma\). In particular, \(\Lambda_M^\phi=(1/M)\{0\}\) is the submodule of \(M\)-torsion points of \(\phi\). The paper investigates the \(A\)-module structure of the Galois group of \(L((1/M)\Gamma)/L\). The main result is that under certain conditions the Galois group of \(L((1/M)\Gamma)/L(\Lambda_M^\phi)\) is isomorphic (as an \(A\)-module) to the direct sum of \(r\) copies of \(\Lambda_M^\phi\). For example this holds for almost all monic irreducible \(M\in A\). This is the analogue of classical results in Kummer theory concerning division points of a finitely generated subgroup of \(K^*\) where \(K\) is a number field.
