By means of Cayley-Hamilton's theorem the determination of \(\sqrt{P}\) (\(P\): positive two- or three-dimensional tensor) reduces to calculating the invariant tr\(\sqrt{P}\), which is uniquely determined by a quadratic or by a quartic equation in the two-dimensional or three-dimensional case, respectively.
