This paper is concerned with the study of explicit Runge-Kutta schemes in implicit-explicit splitting methods. A three-stage second order explicit Runge-Kutta method is proposed which has optimized positivity properties. The method compares well with standard s-stage Runge-Kutta schemes of order \(s, s=2,3\). Numerical results are also presented.
