The authors consider two methods, the indirect and the direct one, of forming regular or hypersingular boundary integral equations by starting from an interior integral representation. By both procedures the theory places the same restrictions on the smoothness of the density function for the existence of integrals, by assuming the corresponding smoothness of the geometrical boundary, and the authors establish necessary conditions on the smoothness of the density functions. Numerical two- dimensional examples for the numerical solution of a hypersingular boundary integral equation are discussed.
