The authors study the inverse problem in fractal constructions; given a fractal K, find the maps \(w_ 1,...,w_ N\) which generate it in the sense that \(K=\cup_{i}w_ i(K)\). Often instead of the fractal K it is more advantageous to study measures \(\mu\) supported on K and weight different parts by probabilities \(p_ i\geq 0\), \(\sum p_ i=1\). Then one should seek to find the \(w_ i's\) and \(p_ i's\) such that \(\mu =\sum p_ i\mu \circ w_ 1^{-1}\). Since measures with compact support are determined by their moments, the problem can be transformed into an infinite set of equations involving the moments of a given measure \(\mu\) as the known quantities. The paper discusses both theoretically and numerically methods for solving this problem among affine maps \(w_ i\) in one and two dimensions.
