The weighted additive rule is fully characterized by a list of axioms and an aggregation operator for the corresponding fuzzy sets. Optimization techniques are used to assess weights for criteria based on the opinions of experts. Using fuzzy nonlinear programming the method is extended to the case of linguistic evaluations and judgements which can be modelled as fuzzy sets of type 2. A numerical example is presented.
