The paper describes the complex variable boundary element method (CVBEM) as a series expansion, developed from the Cauchy integral. From the series expansion, the collocation and least squares formulations can be seen to be applications of different norms in minimizing a fitting of the CVBEM approximation function to the boundary conditions of the problem. Applications demonstrate the utility of this method in approximating two- dimensional mixed boundary value problems for the Laplace equation.
