The author deals with generalized entropy solutions to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear scalar equation \(u_t+\text{div}_xf(u)=0\), \(x\in\mathbb{R}^N\), \(f=(f_1,\dots,f_n)\), with only continuous functions \(f_i\). Sub- and super-solutions are introduced and investigated. Existence of a maximal subsolution and minimal-supersolution is proved for the general case of initial data \(u_0\in L^\infty\). Uniqueness is proved for generalized entropy solution with periodic initial data.
