Though the theory of Hardy spaces has been extended to homogeneous Lie groups, the characterization of \(H^ 1\) by singular integral operators was not yet established, even for the Heisenberg group. This has been recently done by \textit{A. Uchiyama} in the case of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) [Acta Math. 148, 215-241 (1982; Zbl 0514.46018)]. Extending Uchiyama's technics from Euclidean spaces to nilpotent groups, the authors encountered some difficulties due to the properties of the group Fourier transform on such groups, which can be bypassed by restricting to the class of stratified homogeneous groups. Their main result is the following: if \(\{X_ j\}\) is a basis for the left-invariant vector fields of degree one on such groups and \({\mathcal L}=-\sum X^ 2_ j\), then \(R_ j=X_ j {\mathcal L}^{-}\) are singular integral operators and \(\{I,R_ 1,...\}\) characterizes \(H^ 1(G)\). More refined results are obtained in the case of the Heisenberg group.
