The title's oscillators are described by equations \(\ddot u_n+\omega^2_n u_n= \varepsilon q_n(u_1, u_2,\dot u_1,\dot u_2)\), \(q_n= \alpha_{n1} u_1+ \alpha_{n2}\dot u_2+ \beta_{n1}\dot u^3_1+ \beta_{n2}\dot u^2_1 \dot u_2+ \beta_{n3}\dot u_1\dot u^2_2+ \beta_{n4}\dot u^3_2+ \gamma_{n1}u^3_1+ \gamma_{n2}\dot u^2_1 u_2+ \gamma_{n3}u_1 u^2_2+ \gamma_{n4} u^3_2\), where \(n= 1,2\). Such equations can occur by studying the flow-induced vibrations, metal cutting chatter, and in rotor dynamics. In this paper, the linear natural frequencies fulfil condition \(\omega_2= 3\omega_1+\varepsilon\sigma\), where \(\sigma\) is a detuning parameter. Approximate steady-state motions are determined by a classical perturbation procedure. Three types of slow-flow solutions are distinguished: a) trivial solution characterized by \(\alpha_1= \alpha_2= 0\) leads to \(u_1= u_2= 0\); b) single mode response (\(\alpha_1= 0\), \(\alpha_2= 0\)), because \(\alpha_1\neq 0\), \(\alpha_2= 0\) is impossible; c) mixed mode response \((\alpha_1\alpha_2\neq 0)\). Then stability properties of these solutions are investigated. The result is applied to a model of a metal cutting process; a systematic parametric study is illustrated by a large number of figures. Also a numerical integration of the averaged equations is performed, showing the existence of other types of solutions. Among these, a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, two Rossler-type attractors, Lorenz-type attractors, chaotic motions, homoclinic explosion, transition from phase-locked to phase-extrained motions, and transition from phase-extrained to drift motions occur.
