The authors consider the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing the nonlinear dynamics of subpicosecond pulses. They point out that accuracy is not improved by decreasing grid elements and show that certain types of solution are unstable. They suggest that unstable modes are associated with periodic boundary conditions. There is little mathematical analysis and the paper is mainly descriptive.
