Rational interpolants with preassigned poles and maximal interpolation degree at the origine are known as Padé-type approximants. Well assigned poles lead to an optimal domain of convergence and an improved rate of convergence. In the paper a good choice of poles for Padé-type approximants is studied for Stieltjes functions whose defining measures have compact supports, i.e., for Markov functions, and for functions with a finite number of real singularities. In the case of approximants with one multiple pole the error is studied very explicitly. The case of two poles is also considered. The results are illustrated by numerical examples.
