    Korovkin's theorem shows that the degree of approximation of functions in \(C[a,b]\) by linear positive polynomial operators cannot be better than \(1/n^ 2\) \((n\) the degree of the polynomial). In fact this exhibits itself already in the approximation of the functions \(1,x,x^ 2\). \textit{V. S. Videnskij} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk Tadzh. SSR 24, 715-717 (1981; Zbl 0497.41012)] showed that this phenomenon has nothing to do with the fact that these are polynomial operators, rather that they are of finite rank. The paper extends Videnskij's results to multi-dimensional cubes. Among the result is the following Theorem: Let \({\mathcal L}_ n\) be the class of linear positive operators of rank \(n+1\) which map \(C(I^ r)\) into \(B(\Omega)\), where \(\Omega \subset I^ r\) and \(B(\Omega)\) denotes the space of bounded functions on \(\Omega\), which map 1 into 1. Further, let \(\Delta \subset \Omega\) and denote \(d_ x(t) : = \sum^ r_{i=1} (t_ i - x_ i)^ 2\), \(t,x \in I^ r\). Then \[ {1 \over 4r} \left( {\text{mes} \overline \Delta \over n + 1} \right)^{2/r} \leq \inf_{L_ n \in {\mathcal L}_ n} \bigl \| L_ n (d_ x;x) \bigr \|_{B(\Delta)} \leq {r \over 4} \left( {\text{mes} \overline \Delta \over n} \right)^{2/r} + o(1/n^{2/r}), \quad n \to \infty. \] \textit{V. S. Videnskij} [Appl. of Functional Anal. in the Theory of Approx. Izd. Kalonin Univ. 1986, pp. 26-32], extended his results to the trigonometric case but this presented some difficulties. No results for the periodic case are presented here.
