The matrix differential equation \(Mq''(t)+ Cq'(t)+ Kq(t)= f(t)\) is solved by means of Laplace transform. The results are used to discuss an extended Cayley-Hamilton identity, controllability and observability matrices as well as Krylov's subspace method. Extensions both to higher-order equations and to the discrete cases are pointed out.
