The paper brings the whole treatment of the wellposedness of the class of initial-boundary value problem for the longitudinal motion of a one- dimensional body with (nonlinear) fading memory. At first, the author formulates an abstract history-value problem governed by a nonlinear functional differential equation in a Banach space. Then he proves the existence of a unique local solution defined on a maximal time interval. If the initial history and the forcing function, appearing on the righ- hand side of the equation are suitable small, the author shows the local solution is actually global. In the local existence proof one applies the contraction mapping principle, the global existence, however is secured via a chain of a priori energy-type estimates. The presence of fading memory, i.e. dissipation playes a crucial role in in the estimations. In the derivations the author uses the results of \textit{A. Matsumura} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. Kyoto Univ. 13, 349-379 (1977; Zbl 0371.35030)] being also inspired by papers of his advisor Prof. C. M. Dafermos. The present paper can be treated as an answer to the critics made by Prof. C. Fichera and concerning ill-posedness of the fading memory theory.
