By a Somigliana ring dislocation the authors mean an axially symmetric solution of linear homogeneous isotropic elastostatics for an infinite domain: \(0<r<\infty\), \(| z|<\infty\), subject to the discontinuity conditions on a fixed cylindrical surface: \(r=R\), \(| z|<\infty\); \(\sigma_{rr}(R,z)=\sigma_{rz}(R,z)=0\), \(\partialu_ r(R,z)/\partial z=b_ r\delta(z-z_ 0)\), \(\partial u_ z(R,z)/\partial z=b_ z \delta(z-z_ 0)\). Here, \(u_ r\) and \(u_ z\) denote the radial and axial displacement, respectively; \(\sigma_{rr}\) and \(\sigma_{rz}\) denote the radial and shear stress, respectively; \(b_ r\) and \(b_ z\) are the radial and axial components of a constant Burgers vector; \(\delta=\delta(z-z_ 0)\) is the Dirac function and \(z_ 0\) is a fixed point of the \(z\)-axis; \(\cdot\) stands for a jump across the surface: \(r=R\), \(| z|<\infty\). The authors show that the solution can be expressed in a closed form involving complete elliptic integrals, and they provide a qualitative and quantitative analysis of this solution. The reviewer notes a number of unclear statements and formal errors in the text, e.g.: 1. The parameters \(A\), \(B\), \(C\) and \(D\) depend, among others, on \(I_{0,1}(\zeta R)\) and \(K_{0,1}(\zeta R)\), and not on \(I_{0,1}(\zeta r)\) and \(K_{0,1}(\zeta r)\) as claimed by the authors on p. 230; 2. In eqs. (7)--(8) \(\exp(i\zeta z)\) should be read as \(\exp(- i\zeta z)\); 3. Eqs. (7) do not make ``the integral equations as claimed by the authors on p. 235 in Section 4.
