This paper discusses (a) some limitations of the use of Chebyshev series in computing Hankel functions for absolutely large complex order and real argument, (b) comparisons of the calculations in (a) with those by asymptotic expansions, (c) Debye's and Olver's asymptotic series and their use in numerical and symbolic libraries. Numerical examples are given (without motivating the specific choices) for the pairs \((\nu,z) = (2+i,18)\), (25, 18), (75, 60), \((50+20i\), 45), (50, 51) and several numbers of terms.
