A generalized flag manifold is a homogeneous complex manifold of the form \(X = G/B\) where \(G\) is a semisimple complex Lie group and \(B\) is a Borel subgroup of \(G\), that is, a maximal solvable complex subgroup. The `standard' flag manifold is the space of all configurations of linear subspaces \(V_ 0 \subset V_ 1 \subset \cdots \subset V_ n\) of an \(n\)-dimensional vector space where \(\dim V_ k = k\), \(1 \leq k \leq n\); the group is \(G = SL(n + 1, \mathbb{C})\) and \(B\) is the subgroup of lower triangular matrices. The authors prove the following vanishing theorem for such a manifold \(X\). If \(L_ X\) is the minimal ample line bundle on \(X\), then \(H^{p,q} (X, \mathbb{C}) = 0\) for all \(q\) whenever \(p \geq (3/4) \dim X\). One of the motivations for understanding Dolbeault cohomology groups is that they play an important role in the standard proofs of vanishing theorems for general ample bundles on projective manifolds. The basic approach to proving the vanishing theorem starts with a variation of Bott's Theorem. The authors establish a key lemma, which, combined with some special properties of flag manifolds, allows them to reduce the vanishing theorem to determining a minimal set of positive roots whose sum is a nonsingular and dominant weight in the weight lattice of \(G\). The authors solve the latter problem for each type of simple group which leads to slightly larger ranges of vanishing for most types and is of independent interest in Lie theory.
