    Let \(G\) be one of the groups \(SO(2n+1)\), \(Sp(2n)\), \(SO(2n)\) over a non- archimedean local field of characteristic 0, \(n\geq 2\). Then \(G\) has a maximal parabolic subgroup with Levi group isomorphic to \(GL(n)\). Let \(\sigma\) be an irreducible self-dual supercuspidal representation of \(GL(n)\) and \(I(\sigma)\) the induced representation of \(G\). In the paper the reducibility of \(I(\sigma)\) is examined. For \(G=SO(2n)\), \(n\) even, irreducibility of \(I(\sigma)\) is proved to be equivalent to the nonvanishing of some twisted orbital integral. This is done by explicit computation of an intertwining operator. This leads to criteria in the other cases, by considering the \(L\)-functions in the denominator of the intertwining operator. These \(L\)-functions are also computed for general \(\sigma\) in the discrete series. The results are reformulated using twisted endoscopic transfer.
