A theoretical framework to classify simple materials, including the so- called purely dissipative ones which are characterized by a history- dependent viscosity tensor, is presented. This scheme extends and modifies the well-known Noll scheme. It is also shown that a single equation can be formulated to describe the usual plastic yield condition and flow for a dissipative model which encompasses constitutive equations for a generalized Oldroyd Bingham material as well as several existing models of thixotropy and viscoplasticity.
