In this paper, which is a predecessor of [\textit{A. Turull}, Adv. Math. 217, No. 5, 2170-2205 (2008; Zbl 1149.20010)], the author for the first time suggests a strengthening of the McKay conjecture which takes into account the \(p\)-local field of definition of the irreducible characters as well as their \(p\)-local Schur indices. In [op. cit.] he actually proves his conjecture, including some other recent strengthenings of the conjecture by Isaacs-Navarro and Navarro, for \(p\)-solvable groups, so we refer to our review of that paper for more details and background on the conjecture. In the paper under review the author proves his conjecture for all sporadic simple groups. He also presents a block version of his conjecture and proves it for blocks with cyclic defect group and for subgroups of the general linear group containing the special linear group.
