For an infinite cardinal \(\kappa\) (with the discrete topology) the author writes \(\kappa =\beta \kappa \setminus \kappa\) and \(U(\kappa)=\{p\in \beta \kappa:\) no \(A\in p\) has \(| A| <\kappa \}\). The tightness of a point \(p\in X\) is by defintion the least cardinal \(\alpha\) such that if \(p\in \bar H^ X\) then there is \(A\subseteq H\) with \(| A| \leq \alpha\) such that \(p\in \bar A^ X\). From his principal results the author derives several new computations of cardinal invariants associated with the compactification \(\beta\kappa\),Lena, G. Di: The authors give some characterizations of arcwise connected trees and their subtrees. Then they obtain some conditions, equivalent to the existence of periodic points for a continuous map \(f: X\to X\), when X is an arcwise connected tree or in particular a closed interval of \({\mathbb{R}}\).
