The author gives lower bounds for the life-span of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for first-order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems in two independent variables, in the case that the system is weakly linearly degenerate. The first part is devoted to an example of weakly linearly degenerate systems, the solution of which blows up in a finite time.
