If \(K\) is a field, a function \( f: K^n \rightarrow K\) is regular at \(a\) in \(K^n\) if there are polynomials \(G\) and \(H\) in \(K[x_1, \dots, x_n]\) and an open neighborhood \(U\) of \( a\) in \(K^n\) such that \( H(x) \not=0\) and \( f(x) = G(x)/H(x)\) for every \(x \in U\). \( f \) is termed regular if it is regular at every point in \(K^n\). For \(n \geq 2\), \( K\) an uncountable field of characteristic zero, and \(f: K^n\rightarrow K\), the author shows \(f\) is regular if for every affine plane \( L\subset K^n\) the restriction of \( f \) to \( L\) is regular. An example shows \(f\) need not be regular if \( K\) is assumed to be an infinite countable field. Another example shows ``affine planes'' cannot be replaced by ``affine lines'' in the theorem.
