It is pointed out that the deformation rate or the symmetric part of the velocity gradient can be interpreted as a real time derivative of a strain in a suitable rotating frame. Using principal axes, the authors determine the angular velocity of the frame and apply the general considerations to the special case of simple shear deformation.
