The authors study the seminorms on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) that satisfy \(|Px |= |x |\) for all vectors \(x\) and all \(n \times n\) permutation matrices \(P\). When applied to the vectors consisting of the eigenvalues of complex Hermitian matrices, these yield the unitary similarity invariant seminorms on the space of Hermitian matrices. Examples, best constants in norm inequalities, and isometry groups of matrices are studied.
