In the present paper, the authors study the connections between some modalities to describe ``small'' triangulated categories. More precisely, if \(\mathcal{T}\) is a triangulated category, we can view it as a ``small triangulated category'' if one of the following conditions are satisfied: \begin{itemize} \item[(a)] \(\mathcal{T}\) is finitely generated, i.e. there is an object \(T\) such that \(\mathcal{T}\) is the thick subcategory generated by \(T\), or \item[(b)] \(\mathcal{T}\) is locally finite, see Definition 2.2, or \item[(c)] \(\mathcal{T}\) has dimension \(0\), i.e. there exists an object \(T\) such that every object in \(\mathcal{T}\) is a direct summand of a finite direct sum of objects of the form \(T[i]\), \(i\in\mathbb{Z}\). \end{itemize} It is proved in Theorem 2.10 that if \(\mathcal{T}\) is finitely generated and locally finite, then it has dimension zero. Moreover, the converse is true if \(\mathcal{T}\) is \(\mathrm{Ext}\)-finite. For an Iwanaga-Gorenstein \(R\)-algebra \(\Lambda\) with an isolated singularity the full subcategory \(\mathbf{CM}(\Lambda)\) of mod Λ consisting of Cohen-Macaulay \(\Lambda\)-modules has an additive generator if and only if the stable category \(\underline{\mathbf{CM}}(\Lambda)\) is locally finite (Theorem 2.7). In the last part of the paper the existence of a generator of a derived category such that the dimension, which is defined in [\textit{T. Aihara} et al., J. Algebra 399, 205--219 (2014; Zbl 1305.18044)], of the derived category with respect to this generator is as small as possible is studied.
