Given two metric spaces \(M\) and \(N\), a map \(f:M\to N\) is said to be non-expansive (respectively, non-contractive) if \(d(f(x),f(y))\leq d(x,y)\) (respectively, \(d(f(x),f(y))\geq d(x,y)\)) holds for every pair of points \(x,y\in M\). A metric space \(X\) is said to be expand-contract plastic (EC-space for short) if every non-expansive bijective bijection from \(X\) into itself is an isometry. The main aim of the second section is to extend the above concepts from the context of metric spaces to the framework of uniform spaces. Then, the authors extend known results about EC-plasticity from totally bounded metric spaces to totally bounded uniform spaces, with applications to topological vector spaces. The rest of the paper is devoted to the following problem: Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be two Banach spaces. Let \(f:B_X\to B_Y\) be a non-expansive map. Is \(f\) an isometry? In [\textit{O. Zavarzina}, Ann. Funct. Anal. 9, No. 2, 271--281 (2018; Zbl 1400.46013)] it has been proved that the answer is affirmative when \(Y\) is strictly convex. By making a deep study of preimages under bijective non-expansive maps of finite-dimensional faces of the unit ball, the authors extend the previous result to the case when \(S_Y\) is the union of all its finite-dimensional polyhedral extreme subsets. They also get a positive answer when \(S_X\) is strictly convex.
