The authors study regularity properties of the weak solutions to the diffusive wave approximation of the shallow water equations. Precisely, local boundedness of the weak solutions to the nonlinear parabolic equation \[ \partial_t u -{\nabla} \cdot \big((u - z)^\alpha | {\nabla} u |^{\gamma - 1} {\nabla} u\big) = f\quad \text{in}\ \Omega_T=\Omega\times(0,T) \] is proved, where $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is an open and bounded set, $\alpha>0$ and $\gamma\in (0,1)$ are known parameters, $u$ describes the height of the water, $z$ is a given function that represents the land elevation and $f$ is a source term accounting for evaporation, infiltration or rainfall.
