The paper discusses a solution procedure for ordinary differential equations based on decomposition. In particular, it focuses on quasilinear equations of second order and gives detailed descriptions of decomposition into i) linear components; ii) Riccati components; iii) Bernoulli components; iv) Abel components; v) separable components; vi) homogeneous components. Moreover, the author studies the structure of invariant groups of these components. Finally, comparisons to the solution procedure based on Lie symmetries and some possible extensions of the above results are discussed.
