Let \(L\in\mathcal{L}(H)\) be a bounded linear operator on a real Hilbert space \(H\). Suppose there is an orthogonal decomposition \(H=\bigoplus^\infty_{k=0}H_k\) into finite-dimensional subspaces \(H_k\) which are invariant under \(L\). The subspace \(H_0\) is the generalized eigenspace of \(L\) associated to \(\sigma(L)\cap i\mathbb R\). It is assumed that \(\sigma(L)\cap i\mathbb R\) is isolated in \(\sigma(L)\). In Stud. Math. 134, No. 3, 217-233 (1999; Zbl 0927.58004) \textit{K. Geba, M. Izydorek} and \textit{A. Pruszko} introduced a Conley index for flows on \(H\) of the form \(\eta(t,x)=e^{tL}x+U(t,x)\) where \(U:\mathbb R\times H\rightarrow H\) is completely continuous. The main point is that the generalized eigenspace of \(L\) associated to the left resp. the right complex half plane may be both infinite dimensional. In the present paper the author applies Čech cohomology and obtains Morse inequalities, given a Morse decomposition of an isolated invariant set. As an application he presents examples of Hamiltonian systems on \(\mathbb R^2\) where the theory yields the existence of a non-constant periodic solution in the presence of several stationary solutions.
