Let \(H\) be a Hilbert space and \(X\) be a reflexive Banach space, respectively, both of them complex, infinite dimensional and separable. In this note, the authors show that every essentially selfadjoint operator on \(H\) has an invariant subspace if and only if each pair of essentially selfadjoint idempotents on \(H\) has a common invariant subspace. Moreover, each pair of idempotents on \(X\) has a common almost-invariant subspace. Both results are generalizations of the same properties that hold for general bounded operators on \(H\) and \(X\), and were originally proven in [\textit{E. A. Nordgren} et al., Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 61, 66--68 (1976; Zbl 0348.47002)] and [\textit{A.I. Popov} and \textit{A. Tcaciuc}, J. Funct. Anal. 265, 257--265 (2013; Zbl 1300.47015)], respectively.
