A third-order linearized backward differentiation formula (BDF)-Galerkin finite elements method(FEM) is proposed for the numerical solution of time-dependent nonlinear thermistor equations posed in dimensions D\(=2,3\). The author proves an optimal error estimate in the \(L^2\) norm, unconditionally, by introducing a proper temporal-spatial error splitting technique. The theoretical results are verified by 2D and 3D numerical experiments.
