We know that there is more than one way to define the graded Lie bracket on the bar resolution \(B\) of an algebra. The authors first show that a particular class of chain maps, of graded degree 1, from the tensor product of two copies of \(B\) to \(B\), gives rise to many brackets at the chain level. These all induce the Gerstenhaber bracket on cohomology. Secondly, the authors gives brackets at the cochain level on complexes other than the Hochschild complex and show that under some conditions, these brackets induce precisely the Gerstenhaber bracket on cohomology. One useful condition, in particular, is when the resolution embeds into the bar resolution in such a way that the diagonal maps commute with the embedding. The Koszul complex of a Koszul algebra in particular satisfies this condition. Finally, the authors recover this techniques with the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket on polynomial rings and the Gerstenhaber bracket for a group algebra of a cyclic groups of prime order \(p\) over a field of characteristic \(p\).
